WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnotherapy combines proven therapeutic approaches with the benefits of hypnosis. This means that people are not treated with hypnosis but are treated in hypnosis.
In hypnosis, the imagination rather than the intellect is active. And it is through our imagination that we have our greatest power to learn new more beneficial behaviours. We will always respond more readily to our imagination than our will-power.
Hypnotherapy can be used to bring relief to existing conditions, change unwanted beliefs and behaviour, or enhance existing talents and potentials. The list of situations where it can aid the individual is endless and it is particularly effective for those who wish to gain greater control - or perhaps regain control - of some aspect of their life. It is a brief intervention therapy. When administered by a professionally trained and skilled Hypnotherapist the benefits are long lasting and often permanent. It is often successful when other, more conventional methods of treatment have failed.
The British Medical Association approved hypnotherapy as a valid medical treatment in 1955
WHY HYPNOTHERAPY WORKS
In the trance state your unconscious mind is more open to beneficial suggestions that will help you to make positive changes. In other words, you have more immediate access to the software in the computer of your mind so that you can install new learnings or programs easily and rapidly.
The unconscious mind does not distinguish between ´real` and `imagined` experiences, and so you have an opportunity to use the power of your imagination to sort and reorganise your perception of past, present and potential future experiences.
There is also a growing body of scientific knowledge called Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), which demonstrates the mind – body link, and the consequent power of hypnotherapeutic techniques to achieve physical as well as emotional and spiritual healing.
For deeper rooted problems, analysis can be used more effectively and rapidly in hypnosis to locate and remove the original cause of the problem.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A THERAPY SESSION?
Consultations are always confidential and last from one to one and a half hours. During your initial consultation your needs are discussed and a treatment approach, which is tailored especially to meet your individual requirements, is fully agreed with you.
I use a number of techniques, both in and out of trance, including Suggestion Therapy, Guided Imagery, Behavioural and Analytical approaches, Gestalt (Role-play), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).
I combine hypnosis with the latest personal change techniques, such as EFT, EMDR, and NLP for faster results. The techniques are selected according to each client’s individual needs. If you want to know more, see below, but it is not necessary to have an understanding of the technique for it to work. They are all easy and pleasant to experience and require active participation with the simple use of your imagination.
WHAT IS EFT?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) are emotional healing techniques which are based on a revolutionary discovery that violates most of the beliefs of conventional psychology. It states that
‘the cause of all negative emotions
is a disruption in the body's energy system.’
This process has its roots in ancient Chinese medical understanding of meridians and energy systems: in acupressure, in acupuncture, in meditation, in prayer and the modern science of Applied Kinesiology.
EFT works with the human energy system, which circulates through our body/mind in channels or meridians. The approach involves tapping with the fingertips on various points on the body while using specific verbalizations to eliminate or reduce all kinds of pain, distress and suffering. This tapping balances energy meridians that become disrupted when we think about or experience an emotionally disturbing circumstance. Once balanced, the upset is usually resolved - the memory stays but the emotional charge is gone. Typically the result is lasting and is also accompanied by positive changes in thinking. Both emotional and physical issues can benefit from an increased flow of healing energy and from the intention of the mind to heal. The technique is easy to learn and ideal for self-help.

WHAT IS EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is another modern psychological technique originally developed in the 1980s to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It has also been found to be very effective in alleviating many other negative emotional states, as the procedure desensitizes the anxiety related to traumatic memories, whether ‘trauma’ is spelt with a small ‘t’ or a large ‘T’. It is an alert (eyes open) therapy which involves focusing on relevant thoughts and memories, whilst the therapist guides you in specific eye movements to effect emotional healing. In depth analysis is not necessary, although it is of course necessary to be willing to recall the events for a brief period in order to heal them.

WHAT IS NLP?
Neuro Linguistic Programming is the name given to a modern (developed from 1970s onwards) range of psychological techniques that enable you to achieve your personal development goals. They can be applied to all aspects of life, such as business, sports, sales, marketing, health etc, and apply equally well to therapeutic change. These techniques are derived from the study of individuals who are achieving excellent outcomes and then modelling what they do, particularly in terms of their thinking (Neuro) and language (Linguistic). By modelling these excellent strategies, you are resetting your own neural pathways (Programming or learning) to automatically behave in new ways to achieve your own excellent outcomes. It is an effective, proven vehicle for accelerated human change, radically altering the “old way” of lengthy psychotherapy.
Experiencing these techniques in therapy involves the use of your imagination applied to your particular issue. The work is done in an alert state, which means that you are fully aware and conversing with the therapist, as you are guided each step of the way. The techniques are often said to be fun and enjoyable and do not require any in depth analysis. Everyone can experience them under the guidance of a skilled therapist. Click for links
